Facebook, which started as a social networking site, is now a digital giant with business in almost all technology sectors. So, we can understand why it wants to change its name to meta to match its plans to launch a metaverse of extended reality technologies. The main focus will be immersive technologies and AR/VR development.

Why Has Facebook Changed Its Name to Meta?

Following a recent rebranding, Facebook has rebranded itself as Meta, a Metaverse-focused firm. The primary aim of Metaverse is to shift the brand image from a social media conglomerate to a leader in AR/VR development.

Mark Zukerberg explains the decision to remake his brand as Meta. He says, “Facebook is one of the most used products in the world. But increasingly, it doesn’t encompass everything that we do. Right now, our brand is so tightly linked to one product that it can’t possibly represent everything we are doing”.

Zuckerberg’s company has poured resources into VR and AR hardware development in the past few years. Their main products include portal video-calling devices, Ray-Ban smart glasses, and numerous Oculus virtual-reality headset models.

The company also announced Project Cambria, a high-tech virtual reality headset, which they will release next year. Also in the works is Project Nasaray, Meta’s first completely AR-capable intelligent glasses, with an unspecified release date.

Meta is also rebranding its Oculus VR headset and other Oculus hardware to match its new name. The company revealed that Oculus, together with Spark AR, and their other extended reality capabilities will be integrated into Facebook Reality Labs as part of a major rebranding of the company’s VR and AR (augmented reality) activities.

The company is also planning to expand its Metaverse. Meta recently acquired the virtual reality fitness training app Supernatural. It’s an app for Oculus Quest headsets that allows users to participate in immersive simulation exercises and routines while working out.

What is Metaverse?

The Metaverse is a concept for a new world where people and computers could connect to play games, have business meetings, do training, socialise, and shop. It envisions a future where immersive technologies become a day-to-day normal.

The Metaverse will be like a digital parallel universe superimposed to our natural reality. It could be like science fiction, where your avatar will have a whole life and journey in the virtual world. It could naturally also raise concerns for privacy and surveillance. Therefore, the company has to ensure that those concerns are answered beforehand.

Giant organizations have big data, and to crunch that data, they need AI. To avoid AI bias in machine learning algorithms, Meta would need to work on providing the right training dataset, monitor real-world performance of the ML, and ensure that there are no hiccups that could ruin the experience of the users or possess threat to their safety.
